Volunteer Appreciation Month: Meet Jian Guillermo

Jian at Front Desk

Meet Jian

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and at The Arc of San Diego, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the volunteers who help keep our mission moving forward every day. One of our newest volunteers, Jian Guillermo, is a shining example of how essential volunteers are to our team and community.

A proud graduate of CSU San Marcos, Jian Guillermo first learned about The Arc of San Diego through the Department of Rehabilitation and at a job fair. Looking for work experience and a way to give back, he found a meaningful connection to our mission. As Jian shared, he was inspired to volunteer because he wanted to give back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey with a disability. That desire to give back is something we see reflected in his work each time he steps behind the front desk.

A couple of afternoons each week, Jian is often the first friendly face or voice people encounter when they reach out to The Arc. From greeting visitors as they walk through the front door to answering phone calls and connecting callers to the right services, he plays a key role in keeping our office running smoothly. Jian especially enjoys the opportunity to interact with clients both in person and over the phone, making sure they feel welcomed and supported.

Volunteering at The Arc of San Diego holds personal meaning for Jian, as our mission closely aligns with his own journey. The Arc of San Diego's mission is important to me since it offers services that help people with disabilities with their life goals, and that includes me as well,he said. Through his volunteer experience, Jian has gained confidence and valuable professional skills, from greeting guests and answering phones to navigating an office environment. He’s even inspired to seek out additional volunteer opportunities because of the positive impact this experience has had on him.

Jian is open about having low vision and relies on public transportation like MTS to get to the office; a reflection of his perseverance and dedication. His advice to anyone thinking about volunteering at The Arc of San Diego? “Give it a go.” Jian believes volunteering is not only a way to support the San Diego community but also a powerful opportunity to gain experience and make a lasting difference.

This Volunteer Appreciation Month, we’re grateful for Jian, and for all of our volunteers, who are truly essential pieces of the Arc of San Diego team.
