 10 Ways to Support Individuals with Disabilities in 2014


1. We completed our Building for Self Sufficiency Capital Campaign, a $4.5 million renovation of The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center in Chula Vista. With the help of community partners including the David C. Copley Foundation, 300 children and adults with disabilities annually will be able to learn, develop and achieve their goals of being a part of a community.

2. In April, The Arc of San Diego joined hundreds of advocates at a rally in downtown San Diego to encourage California state lawmakers to provide an 8% budget increase to fund and restore programs that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

3.  Our Place, The Arc of San Diego's 7-week wellness enrichment program expanded, giving more than 100 participants a choice of nine health and wellness classes including yoga, adaptive fitness, Zumba, aerobic drumming, Taekwondo, healthy cooking, music, art and more at two locations.

4. We launched JusticeWorks, in partnership with The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice & Disability and Growth Through Opportunity. San Diego is now one of four cities participating in JusticeWorks,  a pilot program designed to promote effective communication and collaboration between the I/DD and justice communities, including law enforcement officers, first responders, legal professionals, and victim services professionals.

5. The Arc of San Diego's Employment Services helped 110 people find new jobs of their choice while continuing to provide job training and support the 400 people already enrolled.

6. The Arc of San Diego raised close to $80,000 for children and adults with disabilities at its annual gala held in March,  with this year's 'Speakeasy'  theme transporting guests back in time to the roaring twenties. The event was attended by close to 300 of San Diego's most generous citizens.

7. In August, The Arc of San Diego partnered with Neurodiversity in the Workplace and Thermo Fisher Scientific to launch a training/hiring pilot program for candidates with autism. Eight applicants were chosen to participate in the two-week pilot program, and six of the eight participants were offered jobs with Thermo Fisher at the conclusion of the program.

8. Through our Personal and Leisure Services (PALS) program, 379 people attended sporting events, plays, festivals, fairs and other recreational activities in the community that otherwise they may not have been able to attend.

9. In December, The Arc of San Diego was the beneficiary of a successful new event: Winter Wonderland Fashion Show & Luncheon. More than 300 people gathered at The U.S. Grant Hotel for the event which included a silent and live auction, lunch, and a runway show produced by Leonard Simpson and Fashion Forward. All proceeds raised from the affair directly benefited children and adults with disabilities receiving services from The Arc of San Diego.

10.  A total of 162 ongoing volunteers donated 6,622 hours of service to The Arc of San Diego, assisting in our programs as classroom assistants, exercise guides and recreation aides, marketing & development Interns, front desk assistants and more!
