A Shining Example of Employment Success at MCRD

In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, The Arc of San Diego is proud to spotlight Carina Perez Pino, a remarkable employee at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) whose journey exemplifies growth, leadership, and the power of inclusive employment.

Since joining the MCRD team in February 2022 through The Arc’s Employment Services Program, Carina has become a beacon of positivity and purpose. Her magnetic energy and uplifting spirit have transformed her workplace into a more inclusive, joyful, and productive environment. Staff members consistently describe her as someone who radiates warmth and enthusiasm, even on the most demanding days.

Carina began her career in a Group Supported Employment setting, where she quickly mastered the Meals to Go station; a role requiring minimal supervision. Her initiative and precision stood out, and she soon transitioned to Independent Placement, a significant milestone that reflects her determination and growth. Her supervisor, Sandy, the Food Service Assistant Manager at MCRD, shared, “Carina is a trusted employee whose uplifting presence and exceptional work ethic make her an invaluable asset to the organization.”

Carina’s leadership is rooted in empathy and emotional intelligence. In one memorable instance, she noticed a coworker struggling to ask a question during a group task. Carina stepped in and asked the question herself, not because she needed the answer, but to ensure her teammate felt supported and heard. This thoughtful act showcased her compassion, strategic thinking, and commitment to fostering a supportive work environment.

In 2023, Carina was honored as Client of the Year at The Arc of San Diego’s Annual Meeting. This award celebrated her vast improvement in attitude, work ethic, and independence. Her ability to work without assistance and her dedication to excellence have made her a role model for others in the program.

Chris DeVoy, Program Manager at MCRD, noted, “Carina’s growth has been incredible to witness. She’s not only dependable and hardworking, but she also brings a light to the team that motivates everyone around her.”
