Empowering Lives Since 1990: ADA’s 34th Anniversary
At The Arc of San Diego, we advocate for the rights of those we serve. In July, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George W. Bush.
How does the ADA support our mission?
The ADA ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to areas of public life, like employment, transportation, education, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government services.
The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities similarly to how other laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. This civil rights law reflects the belief that disability should not be a barrier to a fulfilling life and that all individuals deserve the chance to contribute to their communities.
Since its enactment, the ADA has profoundly impacted American society. It has led to significant changes in how businesses operate, how public spaces are designed, and how communities are structured. The ADA has opened the job market to individuals with disabilities, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive workforce. The requirement for accessible facilities has transformed cities and towns, making it easier for individuals with disabilities to navigate their environments. Private places that are open to the public, such as restaurants and movie theatres, must be accessible for everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy them.
The ADA has helped foster a cultural shift in perceptions of disability, promoting greater awareness and understanding of the rights of individuals with disabilities. In the past 34 years, America has made great progress in becoming more inclusive and accessible. The Arc of San Diego recognizes the importance of the ADA and works to help individuals with disabilities live fulfilling lives and be active members of their communities.
