THE ARC OF SAN DIEGO CELEBRATES DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The Arc of San Diego, a local not-for-profit and one of the region's largest human-service agencies, commemorates March’s Disability Awareness Month by hosting open houses at several of their locations throughout San Diego County. The Arc of San Diego, the largest, most comprehensive provider of services to people with disabilities in San Diego County, was founded in 1951 by parents concerned about the lack of services for children with developmental disabilities. It has since grown to seven major centers, thirteen group homes, and one respite house. Arc directly impacts the lives of more than 2,500 children and adults with disabilities throughout San Diego County. Nationally, the month of March is also recognized as Mental Retardation Awareness Month; however, The Arc of San Diego refers to it locally as Disability Awareness Month, an equivalent term in the industry. Tours will be available at all centers and workshops around the county. This is an opportunity to learn more about The Arc of San Diego’s efforts to enable people with disabilities to live productive lives and achieve their full potential.
