THE
ARC OF SAN DIEGO TO BREAK NEW GROUND FOR
SULPIZIO FAMILY ARC CENTER
Groundbreaking celebration set for
Thursday, April 10 – 10:30 a.m.
SAN DIEGO,
CALIF.
–
The Arc of
San Diego, a local not-for-profit and one of the region’s largest human-service
agencies, and The Arc of San Diego and the Arc San Diego Foundation, will host a
groundbreaking celebration for the Sulpizio Family Arc Center of San Diego. The
event is Thursday, April 10 and begins at 10:30 a.m. at the 3030 Market Street
in the San Diego neighborhood of Stockton.
The center opened in 1963 and is the oldest facility dedicated to
assisting people with disabilities in central San Diego. The construction of the
new building was made possible by a leadership gift of $1 million dollars from
Rich and Gaby Sulpizio and contributions from many other individuals and
businesses who are supporting the $3.4 million capital campaign. The leadership
gift, pledged two years ago, enables The Arc of San Diego to meet the growing
needs of the community. In recognition of the generous contribution, the
location was re-named the “Sulpizio Family Arc Center of San Diego” in 2006.
Located at 3035 G Street in San Diego, the center serves people with
disabilities
in the communities of southeastern
San Diego, central San Diego and National City.
The
center offers critical day programs and manages community job sites and
employment opportunities for consumers. The groundbreaking and construction will
take place on the grounds adjacent to the existing buildings of the current
Sulpizio Family Arc Center of San Diego.
The groundbreaking is the first step by The Arc of San Diego to implement
a multi-year plan to renovate and construct facilities throughout San Diego
County. This phase is one of the
most crucial projects for The Arc of San Diego due to the age and deterioration
of the existing building. Additional phases will remodel other Arc facilities in
the South Bay, East County and North County regions. Although many of Arc’s
services are subsidized, the organization receives no funds for infrastructure
and building needs. Charitable
contributions are the only source of funds for capital improvements. The Arc of San Diego is the largest, most comprehensive provider of services to people with disabilities and was founded in 1951 by parents concerned about the lack of services for children with developmental disabilities. It has since grown to seven major centers, thirteen group homes, and one respite house. Arc directly impacts the lives of more than 2,500 people with disabilities throughout San Diego County. |
