COME HELP THE ARC OF SAN DIEGO

THIS SUMMER BY BECOMING A CAMP COUNSELOR

Unique summer volunteer opportunity available for teens and adults ages 15 and up

DRAFT -- SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Every summer, The Arc of San Diego puts together their Camp-A-Lot & Camp-A-Little programs. These are traditional summer “live-in” resident camps designed for children and adults with developmental disabilities that are held in San Diego County. This year’s camp will be held at Cuyamaca Outdoor School and Camp Denver Fox from July 15 through August 21, 2008.

The camps offer everything from hiking to campfire programs to dances and talent shows, but they can’t operate without volunteers. The Arc of San Diego is currently looking for camp counselors for their camps this summer. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has ever thought about volunteering or becoming a camp counselor. There is no experience necessary and offers real “hands-on” experience. Room and board are also provided while at camp. They have current openings for camp counselors (must by at least 18 years old) and counselor aides (must be at least 15 years old). The application deadline for the counselor and aides positions is July 8, 2008.

The Arc of San Diego is the largest, most comprehensive provider of services to people with disabilities and was founded in 1951 by parents concerned about the lack of services for children with developmental disabilities. It has since grown to seven major centers, thirteen group homes, and one respite house. Arc directly impacts the lives of more than 2,500 people with disabilities throughout San Diego County.

Volunteers don’t necessarily need to work the entire summer; one and two week commitments are also available. Honorariums are given to volunteers who work hard and provide a safe, comfortable and fun environment for their assigned campers. Prior to training and orientation, there is an application process that includes an interview, background check, and fingerprinting.

For more information or to set up an interview, please call (619) 685-1178 ext. 255 or e-mail pals@arc-sd.com.
