Arc Enterprises builds San Diego’s work force
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
How do local businesses create, manufacture, assemble and distribute their
products nationwide without a warehouse, staff or space? Many local companies
turn to The Arc of San Diego’s “Arc Enterprises,” where disabled San Diegans,
often called “consumers,” learn valuable job skills and participate in the
local work force.
The Arc of San Diego provides services to people with disabilities, while Arc
Enterprises teaches them work skills to help them grow and be apart of San
Diego’s working community.
This route oftentimes saves company monies, enabling a small, medium or
large-sized business to run efficiently while helping the disabled to grow and
be part of the community.
The Arc of San Diego is a private not-for-profit and one of the region’s
largest human-service agencies. Arc Enterprises is one of Arc’s most popular
programs. More than 1,000 San Diego consumers punch the Arc Enterprises time
clock and fulfill projects for businesses big and small throughout the region.
Arc consumers are given the opportunity to hone their work skills, focusing on
job preparedness for each individual as they complete contracts for other
organizations and teaching skills that can extend into outside work.
The city of Poway is just one example of a local business that uses employment
from The Arc of San Diego’s Arc Enterprises. From custodial and janitorial
work to landscaping, the city’s Poway Lake has several consumers who do
everything from sweeping and picking up trash to painting the tables, raking
and spreading mulch.
Other local companies include Cox Communications, Kyocera, Olhausen, Viejas
and many more.
Arc Enterprises provides “total quality” sub-contract work at five production
centers conveniently located throughout San Diego County. One is centrally
located in Kearny Mesa off Aero Drive; another reaches South County
businesses; and North County houses a center called Rex Industries.
With an integrated work force of more than 1,000 workers, Arc provides a
variety of services ranging from complex to simple bench assembly, shrink-wrap
and custom packaging. And countless organizations depend on these consumers to
economically get their products to market.
Services and capabilities include: assembly-line operations; custodial
services, electronics/electrical assembly; industrial packaging;
landscaping/maintenance; precision grinding; ceramics; printing and mailing
services; refurbishing; warehousing and material handling.
Arc Enterprises’ complete fulfillment and turnkey services also include
assembly, packaging, inventory control, storage and trucking within San Diego
County. For more information or to customize a program, call (858) 571-4369.
